When: 12 February 2024 | What: MLW on Gender-Based Violence – Practice Perspectives

On 12 February 2024, the South Denmark European Office in Brussels hosted our Mutual Learning Workshop (MLW) on policies to end gender-based violence.

The objective of the MLW was to share practical perspectives and foster collaborative efforts to address gender-based violence within in research and higher education. Policy CoP members shared and discussed the current state of the art, challenges faced and successes achieved, and shared good practices on how to keep institutions accountable.

The workshop commenced with an exchange among CoP members on the recent advances in national policies to end gender-based violence and a presentation of the results of the Horizon 2020 UniSAFE project, including its 7P model.

Experiences from Spain, Ireland and France were presented, highlighting their protocols, practices, and experiences with policy implementation. These presentations served as a foundation for in-depth discussions on national frameworks and recent developments.

Participants engaged in group work, sharing their experiences with internal negotiations within their organisations, interactions with national Higher Education Institutions, and the accountability measures in place for institutions.

A significant portion of the workshop was dedicated to identifying collective challenges and formulating input for EU-level policy coordination. Participants explored the obstacles and opportunities related to the EU baseline zero-tolerance code of conduct being developed by the ERA Forum subgroup on inclusive gender equality and specifically the action points proposed under Commitment – Action – Accountability.

The workshop concluded with a plenary session, during which groups reported their findings. Key takeaways included the importance of consistent policy frameworks, effective internal and external communication, and the need for robust accountability mechanisms. Participants also emphasised the value of sharing experiences and best practices across countries to enhance collective efforts against gender-based violence.

The workshop wrapped up with discussions on future actions, including the upcoming R&I days, ERA Forum subgroup meetings, and a midterm event scheduled for the following day. The mutual learning workshop served as a productive platform to exchange knowledge, address challenges, and strengthen commitment to combat gender-based violence across Europe.
